A Bend in the Road Through Franconia Notch Color

Location
Franconia Notch State Park, Lincoln, NH 03251
Date photographed

In Franconia Notch State Park near Lincoln, New Hampshire, this road bends out of sight between two walls of autumn trees. The left side is almost entirely red and orange. The right mixes scarlet crowns with gold and lingering green, and a few white birch trunks show through the leaves. A pale, overcast sky sits flat above it all, keeping the color even and saturated rather than harsh. The foreground tells its own story. Loose red leaves lie scattered across gray asphalt, and tire marks curl over the pavement in overlapping loops. They make an odd human scribble beneath such careful seasonal color. Low guardrails trace both edges of the curve and lead the eye toward the vanishing point. This was photographed with a Canon 5DSR and a Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM. The wide view takes in the whole scene, from the leaf-littered ground to the treetops framing the bend.
