A School of Small Fish Over Pebbles in Edgartown's Clear Shallows

At Edgartown Harbor Beach, the backwater shallows are clear enough to read the bottom like a map. Rounded pebbles in amber, rust, and gold sit under a thin veil of water, with soft green algae and tufts of purple and red seaweed gathered along the edges. Moving across all of it is a dense school of small silvery fish, hundreds of slim bodies angled in roughly the same direction, each one sharp enough to count. The clarity is the real subject here. Nothing clouds the view between surface and stone, so the fish seem to hover over the seabed rather than swim through water. Photographed with a Nikon Z8 and the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm lens, the long reach made it possible to frame the school from above at a distance. For visitors, the lesson is simple: slow down at the water's edge and look straight down. Clear shallows like these reward patience with a living pattern that keeps rearranging itself.
