Orient Point's shingle beach is a gathering place for gulls at all stages of life. On this September afternoon, a young bird—still wearing its juvenile plumage of mottled browns and grays—shared the pebbles with a fully mature adult. The contrast between them tells the story of growth: the adult's crisp white head and body, the yellow eye-ring, the confident stance of a bird that has mastered this shoreline. The younger gull, still learning to read the water and navigate the social hierarchy of the beach, stood close by. Both were alert, watching the shallow waters where small fish move. The pebbles beneath them, worn smooth by decades of wave action, provide the perfect hunting ground and resting place for these resilient coastal birds.
