Cloud Breaks Open Above Artist Bluff
- Location
- Artist Bluff Trail, New Hampshire
- Date photographed
From the granite ledge at Artist Bluff Trail in New Hampshire, the valley opens like a canvas still being worked. Low cloud spills over the ridgelines, and the sun breaks through at the upper left in a sharp starburst, lighting the mist so it glows rather than hides. Below, a still lake holds a pale copy of the sky, ringed by dark evergreens and a crowd of red, orange, and gold. A highway curves along the left side of the valley, and cleared slopes climb the mountain on the right. The rock in the foreground is weathered and cracked, with tufts of moss and a young evergreen working its way out of a seam. From this ledge, the landscape seems to shape creativity on its own terms: light, cloud, and color keep rearranging the composition, and the best response is simply to pay attention. Shot wide on a Canon 5DSR with the EF 11-24mm f/4L, the frame holds ledge, lake, and sky together.
