Headlights on Wet Asphalt Through Lake Placid's Autumn Woods

Location
Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Cauldron, Lake Placid, NY 12946
Date photographed

Seen from above near the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Cauldron, the forest around Olympic Village reads like a woven blanket: copper, mustard, rust, and the occasional flare of crimson, stitched through with the dark points of evergreens. Low cloud rests on the far ridge, softening the hilltop until the color dissolves into gray. A two-lane road runs along the right edge of the frame, its surface glossy and dark, double yellow lines pulling the eye toward the horizon. A few vehicles move through with headlights on, small and bright against all that foliage. Tucked into the trees near the center sits a small pond, a pale sliver of water that is easy to miss at first glance. The balance is what holds this view together. The sky is muted, almost heavy, yet the canopy below seems to glow on its own. Around Lake Placid, autumn makes its case without any help from the sun.
