The field at the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville became something else once darkness settled in for the Night Lights Event, which recently wrapped its local dates near Harrisburg. Camp chairs, blankets, and small clusters of people spread across the grass. Each group tended a paper lantern glowing amber from within. Some lanterns still rest on the ground, lit and waiting. Others have already slipped free, drifting upward in loose trails until they shrink to pinpoints against the deep blue sky. A low, dark ridge holds the left edge of the frame, while the far horizon dissolves into hundreds more lights. The Canon 5DSR and EF 11-24mm f/4L lens made room for all of it: the trampled grass in the foreground, the crowd in the middle, and a sky slowly filling with warm flecks. What stays in the photograph is the scale of it, a whole field letting go together.
