Sheffield Island Light sits isolated in the marshland off Norwalk, a working lighthouse that has guided vessels through these waters since 1868. The structure is a study in practical maritime architecture—rough stone base, white-painted upper tower, and that distinctive black lantern room perched at the top. Two modest brick outbuildings huddle nearby, their weathered surfaces telling stories of salt air and seasonal storms. The surrounding landscape is pure Connecticut coast: dense tree cover, open marsh grass, and that particular quality of light that comes off Long Island Sound. Visiting on a clear September afternoon, the sky was an uncomplicated blue, and the isolation of the place felt complete—a lighthouse doing its job far from crowds, exactly as it was built to do.
